Waterproofing Design Support for Architects

Advanced Damp provides independent design stage waterproofing support for architects, developers, engineers, and project teams working on commercial and below ground structures.

Our role is to help identify waterproofing risk early, support clear technical decision making, and reduce the chance of problems becoming embedded in the design. We work with project teams to review strategy, system suitability, interface detailing, sequencing, and maintainability so that waterproofing intent is defined clearly before construction begins.

Why Design Stage Waterproofing Input Matters

Many waterproofing failures begin long before construction starts. In a large number of cases, the issue is not product failure. It is poor coordination, unclear responsibility, unsuitable system selection, unresolved detailing, or assumptions that were never properly challenged at design stage.

On many projects, waterproofing is not where the first design issue starts. It is where unresolved risk often becomes most visible later. Early technical input helps avoid that, creating space to resolve key issues while options are still open rather than after details have been fixed and construction has already progressed.

Typical reasons early waterproofing advice adds value include:

  • System selection without enough project specific risk review
  • Interfaces not resolved between waterproofing, structure, and services
  • Buildability concerns identified too late
  • Limited thought given to inspection, access, and maintainability
  • Unclear expectations around waterproofing performance or design responsibility

On below-ground and risk-sensitive projects, design stage coordination is a risk management exercise as much as a technical one.

How We Support Architects and Design Teams

We provide focused technical support to architects and wider design teams during the early and developed stages of a project. Our input is structured to work alongside normal consultant workflows and can be used to strengthen waterproofing decision making without disrupting the design process.

We support project teams with:

  • Early stage waterproofing strategy input
  • Commentary on system suitability including Type A, Type B, and Type C approaches
  • Review of key waterproofing interfaces and junctions
  • Buildability and sequencing observations
  • Maintainability and access considerations
  • Review of assumptions that may need confirmation during delivery
  • Performance expectation and risk based discussion

Our role is not to overcomplicate the design. It is to help project teams make better waterproofing decisions at the point where those decisions matter most.

BS 8102 and Below Ground Waterproofing Strategy

Below ground waterproofing should not be approached as a standalone product decision. It should be treated as a coordinated part of the wider technical design. BS 8102 places strong emphasis on a risk based approach to protection of below ground structures against water ingress, including risk assessment, coordinated responsibility, and the role of the Waterproofing Design Specialist.

Our design support aligns with that approach by helping teams:

  • Review project waterproofing risk at an early stage
  • Consider suitable forms of protection for the intended use of the space
  • Clarify where combined systems may be appropriate
  • Identify interface and detailing vulnerabilities
  • Highlight maintainability issues that affect long term performance
  • Strengthen the technical basis for waterproofing decisions before construction begins

Typical Design Risks We Help Identify

Early technical review often helps avoid issues that would otherwise only become visible during construction or after completion. Examples include:

  • Drained protection systems introduced without a realistic maintenance strategy
  • Barrier systems relied on in locations with movement or difficult detailing conditions
  • Slab to wall junctions not fully resolved
  • Service penetrations not coordinated with waterproofing intent
  • Structural assumptions made without considering waterproofing implications
  • Sequencing that makes the chosen strategy difficult to execute properly
  • Insufficient thought given to inspection, access, and future maintenance

These are the kinds of issues that often lead to redesign, compromise, delay, dispute, or remedial cost if they are not addressed early enough.

What Our Design Support Covers

Our design stage waterproofing input can be tailored to the needs of the project and the project team. Depending on the brief, we may support with:

  • Review of below ground waterproofing strategy
  • Commentary on Type A, Type B, or Type C suitability
  • Input around combined protection strategies
  • Interface review at walls, slabs, joints, and penetrations
  • Sequencing and practical installation considerations
  • Maintainability and lifecycle review
  • Support for teams working alongside a Waterproofing Design Specialist
  • Early review of refurbishment and change of use waterproofing strategy

Frequently Asked Questions

At what project stage should waterproofing input be brought in?

As early as possible, ideally during concept or developed design. The most expensive waterproofing problems are the ones embedded in the design before a specialist has looked at it. Early input means system selection, interfaces and sequencing can be resolved while options are still open.

Is your design support independent of product sales?

Yes. Our input is based on risk reduction and performance outcomes, not product-led specifications. Where a system type is recommended, it is because it suits the structure, the ground conditions and the intended use of the space.

Do you act as the Waterproofing Design Specialist under BS 8102?

We can provide CSSW qualified input consistent with the Waterproofing Design Specialist role described in BS 8102, or work alongside a specialist already appointed on the project. The right arrangement depends on the project structure and we can advise on this at the outset.

Can you review a waterproofing specification that already exists?

Yes. We regularly review existing strategies and specifications, either to validate them before construction or to identify interface, sequencing and maintainability risks that need resolving. We can also support delivery of an existing specification on site.

Do you also offer CPD for architectural practices?

Yes. We deliver structured CPD sessions on structural waterproofing and damp diagnosis at your practice or online. See our waterproofing CPD for architects page for details.

Bring Waterproofing Input In Early

If you are developing a new build, refurbishment, basement, podium, retaining structure, or change of use project, we can provide practical waterproofing input at the stage where it adds the most value.
