Essex has one of the most varied housing stocks in the country, and each type brings its own damp problems. Because the county had little local building stone, timber was the medieval material of choice, so Essex is full of timber-framed, lime-plastered and colour-washed houses, especially around Saffron Walden, Colchester, Dedham and Coggeshall. These old buildings need to breathe. Wrap them in cement render or modern impervious treatments and you trap moisture inside, which feeds penetrating damp and timber decay.
