What Is Floor Damp Proofing
Floor damp proofing stops moisture rising up through a ground floor and into the room. In older properties a solid concrete or quarry-tiled floor often has no damp proof membrane at all, or has one that has aged, cracked or been punctured, so the slab quietly wicks ground moisture upwards. The result shows up in the floor finish: vinyl that blisters, laminate and wood that lift and cup, carpets that smell musty, and mould under rugs and furniture.
The fix is not a single product. Depending on what the survey finds, we install a surface damp proof membrane and new screed, a cementitious tanking system, or, where there is real ground water under pressure, a cavity drain membrane drained to a sump. Just as important, we tie the floor treatment into the wall damp proofing so moisture cannot simply track around the edge, a common reason cheap floor jobs fail.
And we are honest when a floor is not the problem at all. A cold slab can attract condensation, a buried pipe can leak, and a new floor can be holding building moisture, none of which a membrane will fix. That is why every job starts with a survey.
Signs of a Damp Floor

Lifting floor coverings
Vinyl, laminate or engineered wood that blisters, lifts, cups or peels away, especially towards the edges of the room.
Damp at the floor edges
Tide marks or dampness where the floor meets the skirting and walls, often a sign of a bridged membrane.
White salt deposits
Powdery efflorescent salts on a bare concrete slab as ground moisture evaporates and leaves them behind.
A musty smell
A persistent damp, earthy smell from the floor, carpets or under furniture that does not clear with airing.
Mould under rugs
Mould or black spotting under rugs, furniture and stored items sitting on or near the floor.
Soft or springy timber
On suspended timber floors, springy, soft or crumbling boards and joists, often with poor sub-floor ventilation.

Prepare the floor
We lift the old covering, clean and prepare the slab, and deal with any salts, bridging or decayed timber before anything new goes down.
Install the right system
A surface damp proof membrane, cementitious tanking or a cavity drain membrane to a sump, tied into the wall damp proofing for a continuous barrier.
Reinstate the floor
We screed over the membrane where needed and leave the floor ready for your chosen finish, sound and dry.
