My house is in Guildford near the Greensand Ridge. Is that a different problem from clay-belt damp?
Standard damp proofing is designed for above-ground walls, not basements exposed to groundwater pressure. If you have damp, mould, salt deposits, or plan to convert your basement, a specialist waterproofing system is recommended.
Which waterproofing system is right for my basement?
Yes. Greensand spring-line moisture tends to be seasonal and linked to rainfall feeding through the porous sandstone, whereas clay-belt pressure (more typical around Weybridge and Cobham) is more constant and driven by the clay's poor drainage. The system we'd specify differs accordingly; a survey identifies which you're dealing with.
We're adding a basement under an existing house in Esher. When should waterproofing be considered in the project?
As early as possible, ideally at the design stage alongside your structural engineer. Retrofitting waterproofing after a basement shell is built is possible but more disruptive and costly than specifying it correctly from the outset.
Our cellar in Dorking has a damp smell but no visible water. Is it still worth a waterproofing survey?
Yes. A musty smell without visible staining often means moisture is present in the masonry or subfloor before it becomes obvious on the surface. Catching it early usually means a smaller, less invasive job.
